Although it was tiring, but it was worthwhile to get engage with these munchkins
Since the cancellation of our visit to the Tadika Blok F two weeks ago, our group was arranged to be as volunteers in one of the session of the Teddy Bear Hospital Project held at Shah Alam Convention Center. As part of the booths taking part in the Malaysian Islamic Children Fair (MICF), the Teddy Bear Hospital booth was allocated exactly next to the main entrance of the fair pulling the crowd's attention.
Our session was at 2 pm till 5 pm on Saturday causing the crowd to be double in numbers! We arrived at Shah Alam around 12 noon and straight went to the booth to get the hang of the actual situation on site. After lunch, we started our roles as volunteers as the Teddy Doctors.
For me and Li Wei, we were in charged at the registration station. We need to communicate with the parents and children about the concept of our booth which is to promote health awareness in children. We came across with many different kinds of children. There was some children were at first whiny and shy but later became hyperactive with the help of other volunteers to entertain them. They were all with ages range from 2 years old to 12 years old. The parents too can be seen to be excited with the concept of our booth and some of them actually tag along in playing the doctor's role. It was enjoying to see that both the children and parents supported this project.
For other members of our group, they were positioned at the station 3 and display area. From the registration, I can clearly see them nonstop educating the children about dengue awareness. It had me smile and chuckled several times seeing them determined and fill with enthusiasm.
Funny thing is that, it may seem that at first we were doing this Social Engagement subject as only part of the university requirement. However when we were actually engaging with the community and socialized with them, some part of us grew fonder towards them making us feel that we are also responsible in shaping these children.
Be part of the community. Not passive but aggressive. Perhaps this shall be the best phrase to say. That's all for now. And yes, I had fun doing this project. :)
